Member Spotlight: Reverb Data
Reverb Data recently launched as the first data-centric music law firm. Led by former UMG Chief Privacy Officer Andy Blair, the firm offers a unique mix of deep legal, data, and industry expertise.
Reverb Data is the first and only law firm and strategic consultancy focused on data in the music industry. Founded by Andy Blair, former global Chief Privacy Officer at Universal Music Group, Reverb Data fills a growing need for artists, labels, music tech companies, and artist services organizations.
From Noise to Harmony
Data is well and firmly established as a cornerstone resource in the music industry. From streaming, metadata, and royalties to fans and social media, data drives nearly every aspect of the business. But data is still often confusing and misunderstood, with much of its value left on the table.
Reverb Data helps clients navigate their complex and often overwhelming data landscape, clarifying data rights, risks, and opportunities and developing strategies to transform uncertainty into value.
For artists, Reverb Data can design and execute artist-centric fan data strategies, providing the legal documents and contract updates to establish a foundation for long-term success.
For labels, Reverb Data can help identify and execute on data opportunities across distribution deals, artist services offerings, and marketing strategies.
For music tech companies and other industry stakeholders, Reverb Data can help ensure your products and strategies are trusted by your customers and optimized for success.
A Unique Offering
After nearly a decade as UMG’s primary lawyer on data issues, Reverb Data founder Andy Blair noticed a substantial and growing gap in the market. In short, music lawyers struggle with data and data lawyers struggle with the music industry.
The essence of this gap is that data law isn’t built on IP or other legal concepts familiar to music lawyers. It is a distinct area of law that requires specific skills and experience that most music lawyers don’t have. Similarly, most data lawyers don’t understand the nuanced relationships among artists, labels, managers, DSPs, distributors, agencies, and others that make the music business go.
As a result, a vast majority of the contracts and business relationships in the music industry, and the strategies behind them, fail to adequately address the collection, use, and sharing of data, who controls it, and how to share its value.
Reverb Data is built to bridge this gap. Founder Andy Blair combines a technology background with major label experience and deep expertise in data law to offer clients a skillset that is unique in the music industry.
